Windows are the eyes to home, but they’re also a key source of vulnerability for your property. Windows are one of the main sources where your home is losing its valuable energy.
Every winter, heat is lost through your windows like cash into the drain. Worn and deteriorated windows are also potentially a security risk for break-ins. This is why it’s so important that your windows are not just in working order, but that they’re truly top-of-the-line.
Here’s a checklist of five signs to watch out for to know if your windows need replacing.
1. Outside Caulking
One of the easiest ways for heat loss to occur is by the seal outside of your windows to be broken. Go outside and double-check that the parameter of caulking enforcing your windows is healthy and stable. Caulking is usually the first aspect of your window to begin to deteriorate, especially if your home undergoes especially tough winters.
2. Operation
Does all of the hardware for your window work properly? Take a good check to see if all aspects of your windows are working. The damp weather can easily create rust on the inside of the windowpane, making it difficult to open or close. Temperature changes can also cause your window to slowly warp if left uncared for.
3. Quality of Glass
Even if your window’s glass is slightly broken or cracked it can cause permanent damage to the rest of the frame. A crack is definitely more than just a visual issue and should be taken care of as soon as possible. Your window needs to be fully sealed to ensure energy efficiency. If your window is older, it often means that it will require replacing.
4. Framing
Quick changes in temperature will cause warping in the wood of your window frame. Keep a close eye on the frames, as over time they will begin to change shape – making it difficult to open and close properly. The most important place to keep your eyes on is the corners and joints of the wooden window frame. Vinyl frames won’t have this issue, as the corners are completely attached and act as a single item.
5. The Draft Test
This is the final and ultimate test to see if your windows may need replacing. It’s sort of like holding a séance: close all of the windows and doors in your room. Once you’re sure you’re good and sealed inside, light a candle and hold it up to the window you’re testing. If there’s any sort of draft, you’ll notice the candle begin to flicker. If there’s no flicker after a minute or so, then your window is probably good to go.
Your windows and doors can leave your home vulnerable to unnecessary loss of heat and energy, while also acting as a security risk if they’re not properly taken care of.
