Why Choose Casement Windows For Your Home?

Casement windows are one of our most popular window styles, their simple design and ventilation qualities make them perfect for just about any home. Also known as crank windows, casement windows open outwards and are hinged at the side. Featuring a crank to open and close (hence the name ‘crank windows’), these windows are easy to use and with a 3-part locking system, they also offer excellent security benefits.

Pair a new casement window installation with our fixed casement windows for cohesive designs throughout your home. Perfect for windows that do not need to be opened, fixed casement windows have the same design without the opening functionality.

Casement Window Replacement

Installation Choices For Casement Windows

Full-Frame Vs Retrofitting

Full-Frame Replacement

A full-frame casement window replacement involves removing the entire existing window, including the frame. This more extensive process allows our team to thoroughly inspect the area for potential issues, such as rot or mould.

Retrofit Installation

A retrofit involves replacing only the window sash while preserving the existing frame. This less invasive method is generally more cost-effective and ideal for homeowners looking to replace only their window glass. However, it’s essential to ensure your existing frame is in good condition before selecting a retrofit.

The Ultimate Sidekick

Fixed Casement Windows

Fixed casement windows share the same basic structure as a standard casement but window without the opening mechanism. While they do not provide ventilation, they can significantly enhance a room’s ambiance and overall home aesthetics.

Often used in conjunction with other window styles, fixed casement windows are commonly found in bay window configurations or as part of a larger window grouping. They are particularly suitable for areas of the home that require natural light but where ventilation is not a priority, such as stairwells.

FAQ

Questions About Casement Windows

What are casement windows?

Casement windows are attached to the frame by one or more hinges on the side. They open to the left or right, which allows for full flexibility and optimized ventilation. This type of window is extremely popular amongst our clients, as it is very easy to operate and it comes in a variety of styles. Casement windows are normally referred to as crank windows because they open using a cranking mechanism which is perfect for adjusting noise pollution and airflow.

Where to install casement windows?

They can be installed anywhere in the home. Due to their strong insulating properties, casement windows are also good in drafty, hard-to-reach areas in a high position. They can also be installed in bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, basements and virtually any room in the home.

Are casement windows more energy efficient?

Casement windows are considered to be the most energy efficient type of window because of their amazing insulating properties, multi-point locking system and low-E coated glass. Their strong seal allows for maximum airtightness with the sash pressed tightly against the frame. To further increase their energy efficiency, double-pane and triple-pane casement windows are filled with argon gas, which is less conductive than normal air and thus reduces cold or hot air escaping through the windows.

How big can casement windows be?

Casement windows come in various shapes and sizes, and they are highly adjustable to suit the dimensions you require. Single unit widths range from 1′-5″ to 3′-0″ and are configured in up to 5-wide styles installed together for maximum airflow. The best news of all is there is no unique size for casement windows, and NorthShield can provide you with custom-fit casement windows designed to fit your space perfectly. Custom and standard sizes can be further paired with a center sash with operable flanking windows, additional equal-sized sashes, paired with an awning casement window, with a transom window on top, and so on.

How wide do casement windows open?

One of the most common casement window installations sets the window vertically so that it opens like a door, which allows for maximum flexibility and control of airflow. We can either install the windows individually or together. When casement windows are connected side by side, the ones at the end are usually those that can be opened, while the centre remains fixed. When installed sideways (awning windows), casement windows open to a maximum of 45 degrees. Plus, casement windows that are available at NorthShield have special easy cleaning features with hardware that allows you to open and wash both sides of the window from the inside of your home.

What’s the difference between casement and fixed casement windows?

A fixed casement window has the same type of functionality as a casement window. The only difference is that it cannot be opened and it is installed in combination with regular casement windows to allow for a better view.

What to do before a casement window installation?

Whether you need us for casement windows replacement or to install new ones, our team is sure to impress you with their skill and professional approach. One of our friendly reps will visit your home where they will review all the windows concerned and provide you with a free estimate. Each opening will be measured in order to determine the correct size that the new casement window should be. Custom made windows ensure the perfect fit that your home deserves (an experienced installer will visit your home to measure the openings again and make sure that each window is just the right size). Once all the measurements have been taken, it’s time for the manufacturing process.

What to do when the installation day arrives?

Replacing an old window will involve the careful removal of the existing window in order to make way for the new one. This can be a messy process, but we understand how important it is to keep your home neat and tidy. This is why our installation team takes the time to clean the areas we work on. We also dispose of your old windows so you don’t have to! Installing the new windows involves fitting the frame and then the windows. Perfection is essential and we take the time to make sure that the window is straight and level. If not, it can affect the way the window functions. We use spray foam to secure the window frame in place. This also acts as the perfect insulation between the frame and the wall. The foam expands to fill up any gaps and, once dry, the excess can be trimmed off with ease.
