Entry doors come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and several materials. Fiberglass doors are becoming increasingly popular for a number of reasons. Not only are these doors beautiful, but they are also really tough and they are great insulators. That said, it’s always important to make sure that you follow the proper maintenance guidelines in order to keep your door in top shape for as long as possible.
Instructions From The Manufacturer
When you purchase a new fiberglass entry door, it will come with care and maintenance instructions. These instructions need to be followed in order to avoid the risk of voiding any warranties.
Stains And Finishes
Just like many other door types, fiberglass doors can be stained and refinished from time to time. This is best if the door is in perfect working order but the appearance has deteriorated due to environmental factors and slight accidental damage. It’s important to find out whether the finish of the door is covered by a warranty or not. If the door is still under warranty, it’s best to have the manufacturer perform or arrange the repairs. If you are planning on staining the door, you will need to prepare the surface by stripping the outer layer first.
Cleaning
Dirt has a way of building up in places that we don’t always notice. Dirt will accumulate on the exterior of the door and it’s likely that the interior will also need to be cleaned from time to time. Again, consult the manufacturer’s instructions with regards to cleaning. Unless otherwise specified, the best cleaning mixture is a solution of mild soapy water.
Door Fixtures
The moving parts like hinges and door knobs are bound to become worn after a fair amount of use. In many cases, you might only need to lubricate these parts to keep them from squeaking. Greasing these parts also helps ensure that they work properly without sticking or getting stuck. That said, if you are in the mood for a change, you can transform the entrance of your home by updating your door knobs and other fixtures. Do take care when replacing things like the door handle. If you buy one that is a different shape or smaller than your existing handle, you will notice the outline from the previous handle. It’s also good to remember that undamaged fixtures need not be discarded. Hang on to the older fixtures because you never know when you might need them!
Door Guards
You will find door guards installed at the top, bottom, and inner side of your door. They are made from rubber or metal and they are held in place by a few small screws. If your door does not already have guards, you can add them later. Their purpose is to protect against dents, scratches, scuffs, and general wear and tear. They also help improve the level of insulation offered by the door. Which means better energy efficiency!
