Unlike many other types of windows, vinyl frames last long and they are really easy to care for. That said, there are some important guidelines that all homeowners should be aware of in order to ensure that they maintain their perfect condition for as long as possible. When installing vinyl windows, here are some important care tips to remember:
Cleaning
Cleaning your windows goes beyond the glass. It’s also important to make sure that your window frames are kept clean. Dirt gets everywhere despite your best efforts. The exterior frames are most likely to get dirty first. If you have a smudge or dirt deposit on your frames, resist the urge to scrub! Use a mild soap (the non-abrasive variety) and warm water. Avoid acidic cleaners too since they can cause more harm than good. If you are unsure, you can test your cleaning solution on an inconspicuous part of the window frame.
Proper Glass Cleaning
Remember that your window glass will usually have some kind of coating. All the more reason to avoid using abrasive cleaners or cleaning equipment. It’s always worth using mild cleaners and natural products rather than harsh chemicals that can damage your windows, health, and the environment.
Screens
Screens are often considered tricky to clean, but there are some great products available these days. Mild, soapy water, and a soft brush will do the trick. If you have a lot of window screens to clean, you may want to consider investing in a special screen cleaning brush to make light work of it all.
Hardware
Take the time to inspect the hardware and moving parts on a regular basis. Regular lubrication will help ensure that your windows are perfectly operational for years. Take the time to vacuum the frames. If dirt accumulates inside the frame, it can prevent it from opening or closing. Check the weather-stripping too while you’re at it and replace when and if necessary.
Drainage
Vinyl windows are designed in such a way to prevent water from building up inside the frames. The weather can be unpredictable as it can be unforgiving. All the more reason to make sure that water has an easy way out! Make sure that you inspect and clean out this drainage system on a regular basis in order to ensure that it functions properly when you need it the most! Remove any dirt or debris from the frame and these drainage holes in order to allow water to escape rather than getting stuck inside the frame and causing damage.
Prompt Care
When you notice that a bird has made its mark on your vinyl window frames, for example, it’s important to get to work immediately. This is not only true for vinyl windows but all surfaces. Bird droppings are acidic and the longer you wait, the tougher they are to remove. For the most part, all you will need is a soft cloth with warm soapy water. If need be, hold the warm slightly soapy cloth or sponge on the affected area to allow it to “soak”. Rub gently and always be patient. If need be, give the affected area another “soak” before rubbing again. Avoid scrubbing since this could scratch your window frames. The same goes for the window glass! Swirl marks and streaks might be easy to remove but scratches most certainly are not!
